چکیده

Constraining the controls on distribution of sediment at a continental scale is critical step in understanding long-term landscape and climate evolution. In particular, role rivers wider routing impacts aeolian loess formation remains limited. Extensive Quaternary deposits are present East European Plain Black Sea - Caspian region associated with major draining numerous surrounding cratonic orogenic hinterland areas. Coupled this, complex changes local global sea level have affected extent drainage Sea, glaciations impinged northern margin Plain. This suggests that may show patterns controls. Here, we apply UPb dating detrital zircons from fluvial, marine (dominantly loess) sedimentary records region. shows strong control large sediments region, through long-distance transport several 1000 km, sourced mountain glacier areas prior to or atmospheric reworking transportation. Strong spatial variability zircon data reveals multiple diverse sources different individual sections, whereas no significant temporal source detected during Late Pleistocene Lower Volga South Russia. While supply glacial via plays an important for provenance deposits, our indicate stark diversity often driven by input sources. Similar loess, basins also variability. controlled bathymetry seas, leading intermixing currents within, but not between separated basins. A direct comparison same depositional site although both dominantly river containing far travelled material, play more many deposits.

Controls on erosion intensity in the Yangtze River basin tracked by U–Pb detrital zircon dating

a r t i c l e i n f o The Yangtze River dominates the drainage of eastern Asia, yet the processes that control erosion within the basin are obscure, making the interpretation of the detritus record difficult. In this study we used U–Pb dating of zircon grains from the modern main stream and major tributaries to identify the sources of sediment production, based on the diversity of zircon ages a...

The Caspian Sea region: environmental change.

Ecosystems in the Caspian Sea region have been heavily modified by anthropogenic activities, mainly as a result of changes in the water flow and degradation of the water quality in the ecosystems. Changes in the regional environment have influenced regional economies, particularly obvious in the impacts on fish stocks. Using the methodology developed in the GIWA project, experts in the region c...

Small-volume U–Pb zircon geochronology by laser ablation-multicollector-ICP-MS

U–Pb zircon geochronology is hampered by problems acquiring meaningful geologic ages on zoned grains that retain isotope signatures from multiple growth or thermal events. We present a new method using laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry to overcome complications asso ciated with intricately zoned zircon crystals through in situ sampling of zircon volumes...

Zircon U-Pb geochronology of the Ottawan Orogeny, Adirondack Highlands, New York: regional and tectonic implications

Both single and multigrain U-Pb zircon thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) as well as sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP ll) dating of two suites of Adirondack granites have yielded ages constraining the principal tectonomagmatic events of the Ottawan Orogeny to the interval ca 1090–1035 Ma. The earliest of these consists of mildly A-type hornblende granites of the Hawkeye...
